Spreadsheets

Assignment for Unit 1

  1. Complete the following spreadsheet. (Start by creating a new spreadsheet and typing in the information you see.):

The spreadsheet should calculate a course grade. Make up grades for exams and assignments that don't have values. Save the file as MYGRADES. (Note: Course grades for this course may be calculated differently. The class syllabus explains how your grade for this class will be calculated.)

  2. Think of a costly item you would like to purchase in the future? How many years can you wait to purchase it? How much can you save each month toward the purchase of this item? How much do you have saved right now that will go toward the purchase of this item? Complete the following spreadsheet and adjust the values for Number of years, Savings each year, and Current savings until the value in cell C5 equals the cost of the item you want to purchase. [Note, this is an example of using a spreadsheet to perform what-if analysis. Click here for an example scenario.]

The cell C5 should contain the formula FV(C1,C2,C3,C4,1). Note: The formula in C5 expects the values in C3 and C4 to be negative. (This is a standard accounting practice.)

    Save the file as SAVINGSPLAN.

Once you have finished all steps, use File Upload to submit your results.
