There are lots of things that affect the way your document looks on a page. You might have wide margins and double-spacing between paragraphs when you are trying to make your paper appear long. You might center your name at the top of your resume. And you might use different character styles to emphasize a point. All of these are examples of formatting options.
Format options are grouped according to their scope of influence. The three levels of formatting are character, paragraph, and page. A character, a paragraph, and a page are all units of style.
