What are headers and footers?

A header is information that you want to appear at the very top of every page of the printed document (or at the top of all but the first page). A footer is such information to be printed at the very bottom of pages.

Each document has exactly one header and one footer.

Common uses of the header and footer are to display the date, the document title, the current page number, a company logo, or any other information that bears repeating on every page.

As you work on a multipage document, the exact spot where one page ends and the next begins will change. So if you want to ensure that a caption, or page number, or graphic always appears at the top or bottom of every sheet, set up headers and footers.
