What is a template document?

A template document is a model document that captures the static information common to certain style of document.

For example, if you are conducting a job search, it is likely you will want to send thank-you letters to the people who interviewed you. Most likely each document will have the same page layout, format, and share certain elements such as heading, salutation, and possibly opening sentence. To make your life easier, you can create a sample letter, save it as a template, and then create each real thank you letter from the template.

Rather than using templates you could open an old letter, make your modifications, and save it under a different name. However, templates are a better solution, because when you define a template it is placed in a separate Template folder where it is easy to find and safe (you can't accidentally delete it or write over it).
