Footnotes and endnotes are used to document references in research papers and reports.
When writing a research paper or report you will most likely be building on the work of others. It is expected you will quote, paraphrase, or refer to the work of others, but it is important to acknowledge the source of contributions that aren't your own. Footnotes and/or endnotes are the preferred way of acknowledging the contributions of others.
