Notebook paper has horizontal lines to help you write in nice straight even lines. When you have a drawing with multiple objects it's common to want to align the objects in some way. The Word drawing application has an invisible Grid you can use to align objects. When the Grid is turned on, the objects you create and move will move in discrete increments or "snap" to invisible grid lines. With the Grid turned off, you have very precise control over where objects are placed, but it is hard to line up or position objects along a border.
Some drawing packages allow you to display the grid lines when the Snap to Grid option is selected. The image above shows a group of objects with dashed lines in place of the grid lines. Notice how the objects align along the grid lines.
The Snap to Grid command is located in the Grid dialog box under the Draw menu.
The following avi movie demonstrates the behavior of objects when the Snap to Grid option is selected. Notice how the circle moves smoothly when the option is turned off, but moves in larger discrete increments when the option is on.
