What is a text box?

A Text Box is a box of text entered with the Drawing tool. The image above shows a drawing in a Word document that consists of a single text box. You can also add text boxes as annotation to more complex drawings.

Text boxes inside a word processing document may look a lot like the native text in paragraphs, but they are treated differently by the word processor. For example, if you have a figure with text boxes, the Spell checker will not see the text labels in your drawing. Text boxes are treated as images and not words.

You can, however, control the font, style, alignment and size of a text label.
