Word Processing
Unit 1: Introducing Word
Lesson 3: Documents, Files and Disks
How do you remove or erase a document from diskette?
Don't look for a Microsoft Word menu command for removing a document from diskette. The
capability for removing a document is provided by your operating system. Removing a
document from diskette is so common it's implemented by the operating system rather than
the many application programs that run on the operating system.
For instructions on how to remove a file from diskette please refer to the
documentation that came with your operating system.
In Windows 95 you can remove a file from disk with Windows Explorer. Windows Explorer
is a utility program that comes with Windows 95. Here are the step-by-step instructions
for removing a file:
- Start Windows Explorer. From the menu, select . From
the Program menu select
- Select the location. In the left-hand window of Windows Explorer select the
device and folder where your file is located. (Note: Your file may not be in a folder. For
example, it may be named a:\myfile.wps.) You may select the device and folder by clicking
on the name or icon of the device or folder.
- Select the file. Selecting the location should make your file visible in the
right-hand window. Once your file is visible you may select it by clicking on it once. The
name of your file will be highlighted once it is selected.
- Delete the file. Once you have selected your file you can delete it with the Delete
menu command available from the File menu. It will ask you if you want to send your
file to the Recycle Bin. Select the Yes button and feel good about the fact
that even in the virtual world of the computer you're doing your part to keep used bits
from cluttering up the environment.
