There are three ways to change the width of a column and height of a row. The avi movie below demonstrates each method. The text following the avi movie discusses each explicitly.

The easiest way to change the width of column or height of a row is by dragging the column or row divider bar. Dragging a column divider bar changes the width of the column to the left of the divider bar. Dragging a row divider bar changes the height of the row above it.
If you want to change the row height or column width to the size that best accommodates the data in the row or column, double-click the row or column divider bar.
And finally, the Row Height and Column Width menu commands on the Format menu can be used to change the height of a row or width of a column.
Note that you can't change the height or width of an individual cell. That is, you must always change all of the cells in the row or column. Why? Spreadsheets are organized around rows and columns. If you could change the height or width of an individual cell, there would be total chaos. Just imagine what a word processing document would look like if you split the document down the center and moved one half down one line.
When you are changing the size of a column that contains a number you may notice the number change to ####'s. When numbers are too wide to fit in the available display area they change to ####'s. If you want to learn more about this feature, see the related concept.
